TIP OF THE MONTH for march

The “Two-Target” Method: The Easiest Way To Aim like a Pro

Most golfers try to aim at the final target - the flag, the fairway, the landing zone. The problem is that the farther away the target is, the harder it is to align your body and clubface correctly. Even good players fall into the trap of “hoping” their alignment is right.

March is the perfect month to simplify your aim with a method that instantly improves accuracy without changing your swing.

What is the Two-Target Method?

Instead of aiming at the real target, you choose two targets:

  1. Primary Target - where you want the ball to finish

  2. Intermediate Target - a spot 1-3 feet in front of the ball on your intended line.

The intermediate target is the key. It’s close, easy to see, and easy to align to. Once you pick it, you simply:

  • Aim the clubface at the intermediate target

  • Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to that line

  • Swing normally

This removes guesswork and replaces it with a repeatable, professional alignment routine.

Why It Works

  • Shorter distance = better accuracy
Your eyes can’t reliably aim at something 150 yards away, but they can easily aim at something 2 feet away.

  • Clubface become the priority.
Most golfers mis-aim the clubface without realizing it. This fixes that instantly.

  • Consistency without swing thoughts
You don’t need to change your mechanics - just your process

  • Perfect for seniors and beginners
It reduces tension, simplifies setup, and builds confidence.

How to Practice It (2-Minute Drill)

Step 1: Stand behind the ball and pick your primary target.
Step 2: Trace the line back to a spot 1-3 feet in front of the ball.
Step 3: Choose a leaf, blade of grass, or discoloration as your intermediate target.
Step 4:
Walk in and aim the clubface first at that spot.
Step 5: Set your body parallel to the clubface line.
Step 6: Swing with your normal rhythm.

Do this on every shot - tee shots, irons, wedges, even putts.

Bonus: Putting Version

On the green, the Two-Target Method becomes even more powerful.

  • Read the break

  • Pick your start line

  • Choose a spot 6 - 12 inches in front of the ball

  • Roll the ball over that spot

You’ll start the ball on line more often, which is half the battle in putting.

March Challenge

For the entire month, commit to using the Two=Target Method on every full shot and every putt.

Track your results:

  • More fairways

  • More greens

  • Fewer three-putts

  • Better confidence over the ball

You’ll be amazed how much better your swing feels when your alignment is finally working for you instead of against you.

  • Hey Jimmy - the best round ever!!!! Only wood in my bag was my driver. All my irons shots were straight. I did tire out on the last three holes and bogied those but still had the best round ever. Thanks

  • Just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed your recent driver clinic. Please note at the day of the clinic my USGA handicap index was 15.9. The way the clinic was taught, was invaluable. Discussion about mechanics and course management - then time hitting balls on the range - then going to the course to put the lessons into real life situations. The very next day after our clinic, I had my LPGA amateur chapter championship and won with a 74! My lowest score ever! My handicap index is now 12.1. I couldn't be more pleased!!!!
