Tip of the month for may

The Two-Second Pause: Your secret to better ball-striking

As golfers shake off winter habits and start playing more frequently, tempo usually gets quick, arms get jumpy, and contact becomes inconsistent. A brief pause at the top resets sequencing and helps players feel the club, not rush it.

The Tip: The Two-Second Pause

  1. Set Up Normally
Balanced stance, light grip, soft arms

  2. Make your backswing
Turn your chest, let the club float to the top.

  3. Pause for two seconds
    Count “one….two….” silently.
This prevents the common early-season lunge from the top.

  4. Start the downswing with your lower body
Let the arms follow. The pause naturally encourages proper sequence.

  5. Finish in balance
If you can hold your finish for three seconds, you know your tempo was right.

What This Fixes

  • Rushing from the top

  • Casting or early release

  • Thin and fat shots

  • Loss of power due to poor sequencing

  • Tension in the hands and forearms

On-Course Challenge for May

Use the Two-Second Pause on every practice swing for the entire month.
Then, use a half-second version during actual shots.
Players will feel smoother, more connected, and more confident over the ball.

  • Hey Jimmy - the best round ever!!!! Only wood in my bag was my driver. All my irons shots were straight. I did tire out on the last three holes and bogied those but still had the best round ever. Thanks

  • Just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed your recent driver clinic. Please note at the day of the clinic my USGA handicap index was 15.9. The way the clinic was taught, was invaluable. Discussion about mechanics and course management - then time hitting balls on the range - then going to the course to put the lessons into real life situations. The very next day after our clinic, I had my LPGA amateur chapter championship and won with a 74! My lowest score ever! My handicap index is now 12.1. I couldn't be more pleased!!!!

  • Was out practicing today and received a compliment from a bystander today. I was on the range working on my pitching. Bystander said, "Your spot on with your pitches and swing looks so smooth." Your tips we worked on with regards to pitching 4 days ago were awesome. Thanks Jim
